I met her in nineteen ninety-eight, the last weekend in June
I couldn't believe my eyes when she walked into the room
She had blonde hair, brown eyes, the most stunning smile
I guess I nearly fell in love for the first time
Friday turned to Saturday and the stars were shining bright
I made a move, we got talking and then I held her tight
She told me she'd seen me and thought I looked quite fine
I guess I nearly fell in love for the first time
We walked through the moonlight fields in silence holding hands
And joked about the secrets we would never tell her dad
Then she turned and her eyes stared intently into mine
I guess I nearly fell in love for the first time
The next day I awoke in a place I'd never been
Some might call it heaven but it felt more like a dream
Then it hit me like a sledgehammer, right between the eyes
I guess I nearly fell in love for the first time
Monday was the day for me to make my journey home
So I left her a note tied with a necklace in a bow
And the rain started falling as I left my dream behind
I guess I nearly fell in love for the first time
It was three months later when I received the call
My friend had heard a rumour from a friend of a friend before
Now it seems that girls are more her type
I guess I nearly fell in love for the first time
